Foam Skins and Sheets
Given how amazingly versatile foam is, there truly is no right way of using it and its applications are often only limited by your imagination. If you need padding, cushioning or protection in any capacity, then foam is likely to provide a great solution. This is why Act Foam provide our customers the options of buying whole foam sheets and foam skins, as well as our range of precut and shaped products.
Foam skins are essentially very similar to foam sheets, except that they have one key difference – one side is comprised of a solid surface. When the foam is manufactured, the liquid polyethylene has gas blown through it, causing bubbles as it is allowed to set and these bubbles leave the tiny air pockets inside the finished foam. Because polyeutherine is a plastic, when it sets the outer edges will form a solid and smooth layer of plastic and when the block is sliced up, the outer edges with their hard side are called skins. This is not to say that foam skins are a pointless by product as they have a range of applications all of their own. They can be very useful in providing an extra layer of protection against damp in camping situations, provide a firm and then soft surface to separate you from an uncomfortable bed frame or line a pets basket where having a hard wearing side is beneficial due to a lot of movement.
Foam sheets are the other parts of the foam block that are manufactured and are soft on all sides. These are used in any number of products, but one of their most common uses is as upholstery foam sheets for making furniture. Upholstery foam sheets are brilliant for commercial and hobbyist uses, as if you want to replace a worn chair cushion, you can simply purchase a sheet and then mark and cut it out yourself. If you are not sure of your exact needs then purchasing a regularly or upholstery foam sheet will give you the flexibility to make mistakes and still have some left, as opposed to purchasing a specific size.
